Our Purpose

About the Committee

Committee Charge

The Newborn Screening (NBS) Committee serves to advise the Board and the Association on matters regarding newborn screening as they relate to issues affecting the membership. Membership is open to all members having interest in newborn screening. 

Priorities

  • Collaborate with the NewSTEPs Follow-up and Education Subcommittee on development of various educational resources (e.g., pre-natal providers).
  • Develop a "Newborn Screening 101" foundational curriculum for early-career laboratorians and new program staff.
  • Create and pilot accessible, on-demand onboarding resources based on the NBS 101 curriculum.

Current Projects

The Committee is currently working on: 

  • NBS Contingency Plan position statement renewal 
  • Collaboration with the Ethical, Legal, Social, and Policy Issues Subcommittee to monitor legal and policy issues and trends in newborn screening programs.
  • Guide activities, education and training of the NBS community to address identified needs and priorities 
  • Identify methods to retain institutional knowledge within NBS programs
