Working to improve electronic test orders and results
APHL, in partnership with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is working to improve the way public health laboratories and healthcare providers exchange test orders and results. 

The Problem

Public health laboratories and healthcare organizations use incompatible data systems. This makes it hard to exchange critical test orders and results quickly, accurately, and securely. These roadblocks can lead to slower results, delayed interventions and less-informed care. These aren’t minor issues—they can be matters of life and death.

The Solution

Our centralized electronic test order and result (ETOR) solution, Detor, facilitates the electronic exchange of test orders and results between healthcare and public health by acting as an intermediary between a laboratory’s information management system and a hospital’s electronic health record. Both entities can send and receive in their native and preferred formats—all the mapping and translation happens centrally on Detor. Implementing Detor allows public health laboratories to plug into existing infrastructure and take advantage of shared resources, expertise and technology across the public health landscape.
