National Newborn Screening Workgroup
The National Newborn Screening Workgroup, convened by APHL with support from HRSA, provides a national forum for evaluating candidate conditions for the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) and addressing key issues affecting newborn screening systems. The workgroup brings together experts, advocates, healthcare professionals, public health leaders, researchers and individuals with lived experience to inform national newborn screening priorities and recommendations.

Overview
In August 2026, HRSA announced a modernized framework for addressing national newborn screening topics, designed to strengthen the national review process, increase transparency, and better respond to advances in science. As part of this effort, APHL, through the National Center for Newborn Screening Systems Excellence (NBS Excel), convened the National Newborn Screening Workgroup.
About the National Newborn Screening Workgroup
The National Newborn Screening Workgroup is a multidisciplinary body convened by APHL through the National Center for Newborn Screening Systems Excellence (NBS Excel), with support from the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
The workgroup serves as a national forum for the consideration of candidate conditions for the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) and for discussion of broader topics impacting newborn screening systems across the country.
Areas of focus may include:
- Candidate conditions for newborn screening
- Emerging technologies and genomic applications
- Data, informatics, and health information systems
- Follow-up and long-term outcomes
- Public health policy and implementation
- Evidence review and research
- Equity, access, and patient engagement
- Education, communication, and public awareness
- Newborn screening program operations and administration
The workgroup brings together individuals with diverse experiences and perspectives, including people with lived experience, family and advocacy representatives, healthcare providers, public health practitioners, laboratory professionals, researchers and subject matter experts from across the newborn screening system.
APHL convenes the workgroup and develops findings, reports and recommendations for HRSA's review and consideration.

APHL is currently accepting self-nominations for membership on the National Newborn Screening Workgroup. APHL seeks a balanced group of individuals who collectively bring experience and perspectives from across the newborn screening system.
Selected members will serve in their individual capacity and contribute to national discussions on newborn screening priorities, emerging issues, and opportunities to strengthen newborn screening systems. Members are expected to serve a two-year term and participate in periodic in-person and virtual meetings.
