PulseNet International

PulseNet International is a network of networks—encompassing seven regions in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Caribbean, Asia Pacific, North America and Europe—dedicated to the surveillance and detection of foodborne outbreaks caused by bacterial enteric pathogens.

About PulseNet International

Established in the 2000s, the PulseNet network has expanded to more than 80 countries worldwide. Using standardized methods and utilizing a common platform for data sharing, PulseNet International has demonstrated regional and international success in identifying foodborne outbreaks at the regional and international levels.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Public Health Agency of Canada currently co-chair PulseNet International activities.

APHL's Role in PulseNet International

GARLRN WGS Implementation

APHL works with PulseNet International regional coordinators to implement whole genome sequencing (WGS) for the surveillance and detection of antimicrobial resistance in enteric pathogens as part of the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory and Response Network (GARLRN), which reaches more than 38 countries worldwide. â€‹

Data Quality Assurance

To help participating laboratories achieve the highest quality of data before sharing sequencing results with their respective countries and/or regions, APHL has developed standardized laboratory and analysis protocols that enable the exchange and comparison of WGS data between laboratories.

Standard Operating Procedures

The PulseNet Standard Operating Procedures below were established specifically for PulseNet USA laboratories, with the understanding that most of the PulseNet USA standards will apply, within varying degrees, to our PulseNet International partners. We encourage PulseNet International laboratories to adopt these standards whenever possible and to modify them in a manner consistent with their internal policies or guidelines established by their institution, state or country.
